The principle of double jeopardy basically requires that no one should be tried twice for the same offence. Therefore, one can use it as a defence to avoid prosecution for an offence for which he/she was previously acquitted/convicted of.
Further still, one cannot be convicted twice on two different crimes arising from the same chain of action except where the crimes carry a significant difference.
However, if one commits the same offence repeatedly (i.e keeps assaulting people on different occasions), he/she can be prosecuted again because this amounts to a new offence.The prosecution will in fact ask for a harsh punishment (deterrent sentence) to stop other people from committing the same crime; since he/she is not a first time offender.
