Many ugandans would wish to travel abroad for greener pastures and for a better pay. Many times some ugandans have been employed as casual labourers for jobs like security guards, house maids, porters, drivers etc.
Many agents are involved till a ugandan worker can reach there required destination., it is difficult at times to apportion liability in case of injury suffered by the recruitee during their course of work, This is because, in most cases ugandan migrant workers have to persue very reach multinational companies.
Some ugandans are turned into slavery, tortured, sexually abused and denied their pay.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE EMPLOYMENT AND RECRUITMENT OF UGANDAN MIGRANT WORKERS ABROAD?
All companies engaged in the business of employment and recruiting Ugandan migrant workers abroad are called recruitment agencies.
The recruitment agency does not know where exactly you are going to work and with whom. Just as the name goes, the company in Uganda is just an agent for a foreign principal.
The foreign principal is usually the person or company who is based in the foreign country and who sends requisition of Ugandan migrant workers to any of the recruitment agencies in Uganda.
The recruiting agency in Uganda will then advertise for jobs depending on the demand by the foreign principal. The recruiting agent is paid a commission from every migrant worker sent abroad.
It is not a favor that recruiting agency pays for all costs incidental to travel documents supposed to be incurred by the worker but this cost is usually paid by the foreign principal who deducts it from wages/salaries of the Ugandan migrant worker.
A Ugandan migrant worker should usually control his or her anxiety for the job abroad and take utmost care before accepting any job placement abroad by doing the following;
Carefully read the contents of the contract of employment and take note of the nature of the job, wages, the company you are being sent to (the foreign principal) the country where you are being sent to work etc.
Make a photocopy of your travel details, employment agreement and leave them with your relatives at home. Some companies have a tendency of withdrawing passports from Ugandan migrant workers upon arrival in the country of destination in a bid to keep them under forced labor till such a time when they have recovered their expenditure on travel and profits.
Avoid traveling with unlicensed agencies/persons who simply smuggle Ugandan workers through Kenya to countries like Uman to be exploited and in the end many have lost their dear lives.
Make sure that you obtain the contact details of the Ugandan embassy in such a country where you are being sent to work. You would be assisted in case of any problem.
Be smart, be safe, life is irreplaceable.
