Axcording to the UNHCR, Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) refers to any act that is perpetrated against a person’s will and is based on gender norms and unequal power relationships.
It encompasses threats of violence and coercion. It can be physical, emotional, psychological, or sexual in nature, and can take the form of a denial of resources or access to services. It inflicts harm on women, girls, men and boys.
The foregoing acts of SGBV are prohibited under Art 21 of Uganda's Constitution which presupposes that all persons are equal before the law.
The emotional or psychological SGBV, is where one omits to do what they are supposed to do or do things intended to heart another person but without any physical contact.
The perpetrators of SGBV can be tried under the Penal code Act, Domestic violence Act, the Computer misuse Act and any other law depending on the merits of the case.
