A child is any person below the age of 18 years.

The rights enjoyed by a child offender start running upon arrest till imprisonment. The following rights are provided for under the children Act Cap 59.

  1. A child has a right not to be remanded in custody of an adult prison.

  2. It is only the family and children's court that can pass sentence against the child.

  3. Enjoyment of the Right to privacy during trial, it is not allowed to publish the child's identity during and after trial.

  4. Words like sentence and conviction are barred from being used against a child. But instead replaced with "proof of offence".

  5. Enjoyment of the right against being remanded beyond six month for offences punishable by death and three months for other offences.
