Children are at the risk of being exposed to sexual abuse that may take various forms to wit include early marriages, defilement, children being exposed to sexual content like pornography, sexual slavery and incest.

Not long ago, girl children are reported to being made pregnant by their nieces and or relatives. Scenarios have also emerged where parents have traded their children for sex in an attempt to get money. A case in point is that of the mother in nansana who used to tell her own biological child to go and sleep with "muzeyi"
Are there any gaps in our laws to protect the children? Is the problem institutional relaxity in giving protection to their children? What is it that we are not doing right?
Discussion are open for willing participants:

Our laws on children are more comprehensive than not. The problem is that their implementation is lacking. Also, the fact that children are not aware of their rights; and even those that are, do not have the courage or ability to enforce them.

Many cases are not brought to the attention of the relevant stakeholders because of fear on part of the children and the witnesses. The responsibility therefore largely lies on the general public, especially parents and persons in authority over children to ensure the protection of their rights.

During this critical time of the lockdown of all institutions of learning, and other economic difficulties that parents and their children are going through, children have been immensely affected.

The responsibility falls on parents to ensure that children are engaged at all times in productive activities like hand crafts, cooking, house chores and revision of reading materials. This would help to keep these children busy and prevent them from being idol.

It is important that our societies be collectively responsible for the up bringing of children such that any sexual abuse of a child can be brought to the attention of police.

It has happened that many times defilement cases are concealed and settled between the victim's parents/relatives and suspect out side the knowledge of police.

Some children have been sexually molested by their step dads, step brothers and relatives and others have been made pregnant. Mothers need to do more to befriend their own children and listen to them at all times. Give your children time in order to be able to detect any likelihood of the happening of such heinous acts.

It is advisable that at all times, parents should know where to begin from in case of any sexual abuse against a child: contact the child and protection unit of police, engage the are local authorities and ensure that your child is not put in such an area which is so susceptible to her being exposed to sexual abuse.

Regulate what your children watch at home, it is very irresponsible for a parent who leaves the children to watch whatever they want on TV Channels, you are not doing them any better but exposing them to sexual content, language and Pornography.

With the amendment of the children Act of 2016 which addressed the gaps in the principal Act CAP 59, the law is properly written in the booklet, what is missing is the enforcement of the law.
