The COVID-19 period has been characterized by a great increase in the cases of child marriages, child trafficking, teen pregnancies, sexual and gender based violence; all which were worsened by the closure of schools. In many instances, even parents and people with custody of children are the perpetrators of these forms of child abuse and violence.
All parents and persons with custody of children should endeavor to perform their responsibilities, considering the rights of children. Children should also be kept busy with constructive activities to avoid such issues that mostly arise from them being idle at home. Community members should take it upon themselves to be alert to cases of child abuse and make sure they are brought to the attention of district officials or law enforcement officers.
