Yes we need the legal aid law urgently passed by the 10th parliament for the following grounds:

  1. The global pandemic of COVID 19 has has had a devastating impact on the economy leaving the small income earners crippled with no means to pay for legal services than ever before but rather left to benefit from the legal aid law for access to justice

  2. Thousands of lawyers, advocates and paralegals are passed out every year to compete for limited jobs available. The legal aid law will be an open window for jobs to many legal scholars.

  3. The legal aid law is necessary to decongest the already full to capacity ugandan prisons with more prisoners being released on bail, no case to answer , acquittal etc than those being remanded and committed which would require an intervention of a legal aid defense counsel.

  4. The legal aid law would guarantee the constitutional right to a fair hearing which presupposes among others the right to be represented by a competent lawyer.

  5. With the intervention of lawyers with the necessary expertise of presenting evidence relevant to the accused’s case, many accused persons would win their cases and not lose them on account of missing out relevant evidence helpful to their cases.

  6. Once cases are heard and disposed of in a timely manner, the government would be able to save the tax payers money spent on feeding, caring and transporting prisoners to courts of law.

  7. Our counter parts in Kenya and Tanzania have already moved a step ahead and enacted the legal aid law, Uganda cannot afford to be left behind.

  8. If this law is not passed by the 10th parliament before its term of office expires, it would again take the movers of this law back to square one.

  9. Having an empowered community rest assured of legal representation, saves the government’s resources spent in fighting corruption and senstizing the public about rules and regulations.

  10. The legal aid law would guarantee the constitutional right of equality before the law for the poor and the vulnerable ugandans through legal representation.
